Abstract
Aims: Cultural spaces play a significant role in fostering sociopetality, particularly when their design facilitates user interaction. This study focuses on the Central Library of Kerman, aiming to identify and analyze the component of “behavioral diversity” as a key factor in enhancing sociopetality.

Methods: The research investigates the Central Library of Kerman with regard to the “behavioral diversity” component. A mixed-method approach combining field observation and questionnaires was employed. The indicators of “visual integration,” “spatial responsiveness to user participation,” and “seating areas” were evaluated through questionnaires, while “spatial configuration” and “spatial flexibility” were analyzed via field observations.

Findings: The study showed that visual integration alone does not have a significant effect on the diversity of secondary activities. In contrast, spatial arrangement and the use of mandatory pathways play an important role in attracting users. Users prefer open spaces over enclosed ones for group activities. Spatial flexibility and the formation of collective spaces alongside main activities positively influence behavioral diversity. Designing spaces that provide complementary public services in addition to their primary functions improves user experience and social interactions. Seating areas equipped with tables, power outlets, and vegetation  increase user presence and interaction.

Conclusion: The findings highlight that “seating areas” and “spatial flexibility” played the most significant roles in enhancing users’ behavioral diversity. Conversely, elements such as “visual integration,” personalized furniture arrangement, and water features had minimal effect. These results underscore the need to strengthen effective spatial elements and reconsider the design of less impactful areas to improve sociopetality.
