Abstract

Aims: Residential use prevents effective communication between the monument and the audience, therefore the new type of use that is assigned to them during the restoration process is significant. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the adaptive reuse of the Tehran valuable houses by Tehran Beautification Organization and Municipality of Tehran based on the place-based contemporization model.
Materials & Methods: The qualitative research method is adopted based on the "synchronic discourse analysis". By examining the place-based contemporization approach, the participation of all stakeholders and influential people is inevitably divergent. Considering different groups in nine case studies of changing the use of historic houses in Tehran, the quality of the neighborhood is analyzed with the approach of the article. The process of changing the use of historic houses was also explained based on this model.
Findings: In all cases, developmental discourse, including local restoration, quality enhancement and development stimulus has a higher score than all other discourses. The discourse of unconscious reproduction involves the use of place and interactions and experiences after developmental discourse is important.
Conclusion: In the highperformance architecture theory, contemporization and reuse of the valuable houses in Tehran with the approach of the article can make these houses a better place and link them to the neighborhood. The conclusion highlighs the successful record of the Tehran Beautification Organization and the Municipality of Tehran in contemporization of the Tehran valuable houses; as well as benefits and drawbacks.

Abstract

Aims: The heritage of early modern architecture in the first Pahlavi era, represents the concept of identity in a new domain which could be attributed to discontinuity of traditional Iranian architecture. Historical architecture in the first Pahlavi era is one of the first attempts made to protract the identity of Iranian architecture in its new shape. The present study was an attempt to retrieve the roots and levels of the historical approach in the first Pahlavi era to explain how identity remains embedded in the modern architectural heritage of this era.

Methods: in the present qualitative study, a descriptive-analytical approach is used to decipher the relationship between the cultural values of modern architectural heritage and the concept of identity in architecture. Using relevant documents, the researcher has tried to explore the trend of architecture formation in the Pahlavi era. By studying library sources, the researcher has also tried to analyze the concept of identity in architecture as well as components affiliated with that. In the next step, an inferential approach is used to investigate the relationship between historicism and identity development in the modern architecture heritage and the results are used to analyze a series of selected buildings associated with the historicism current of the first Pahlavi era.

Findings: Imitative, schematic and conceptual historicism are three components of retrospective approach that are directly correlated with different levels of identity: formal, inferential and semantic.

Conclusion: In the architectural heritage of the first Pahlavi era, Identity is, from a historical perspective, formally transferred through a direct perception and objective adaptation to the attributes of historical architecture in Iran. In the wake of that, another group of buildings was formed, which transferred identity through content representation and as a result of indirect use of Iranian architectural elements and the refinement and abstraction of historical components. Despite emphasizing on similarities, these buildings actually depict a cultural distinction in architectural heritage of this era.

Abstract

Aims: Ekbatan Town in Tehran, recognized as one of the prominent legacies of contemporary Iranian architecture, has consistently attracted attention for its distinctive network of public spaces. This study seeks to offer an interpretive analysis of the semantic system embedded in these public spaces, drawing on the lived experiences and meaning-making practices of its residents.

Methods: This study adopts an ethnographic approach within the interpretive-constructivist paradigm. Field observations and interviews with residents of Ekbatan Phase 1 were conducted to explore their lived experiences, which were subsequently analyzed to interpret the semantic constructs they had developed.

Findings: The semantic system within Ekbatan's public spaces is shaped by meaning-making elements such as language, context, history, and symbols. These elements were analyzed through semantic units, which led to identifying initial and core themes, ultimately culminating in extracting semantic constructs. Key constructs identified include spatial identity distinct from the city, narrative and spatial experiences, urban civility and social activism, as well as the historical characteristics of the space and its architecture in daily life.

Conclusion: The lived experiences of Ekbatan residents underscore the critical role of public spaces in residential complexes in shaping social and cultural semantics. This research illustrates that attention to the semantic systems of public spaces can enhance the quality of life, strengthen urban identity, and promote the long-term well-being of residents in social housing projects across the country.
